Each spring, NYU Ally Week affords the entire university the opportunity to further their understanding of the lives and experiences of others, and to engage with and learn about the social injustices that different sects of the population face. Through events centered on intersectional education, Ally Week promotes a widespread and comprehensive understanding of systems of oppression, subjection, and disadvantage. Ally Week in 2016 ran from April 11th to 14th.
In 2016, seeking to redefine Stern’s preconceived notion of allyship, we have established a theme for our events: Educate, Encourage, and Engage. To educate is to learn about the issues present for the various subjected groups. To encourage is to reinforce the new ideas throughout the week. To engage is to take what you’ve learned and put it into practice as an ally.
